Serving Shadows Instead of Substance

Through observation, conversation, and meditation I have come to realize that the state of Christianity is under attack. There are numerous Christians in mental and spiritual bondage regarding true freedom found in Christ Jesus. I watch as believers ritualistically and legalistically follow doctrines in order to “work out their salvation”. But, they fail to find liberation through the acceptance of Christ's salvation, grace and mercy.

Reading through Colossians 2:16-17; 20-23, Paul discussed this growing trend in Christendom:

“So don't put up with anyone pressuring you in details of diet, worship services, or holy days. All those things are mere shadows cast before what was to come; the substance is Christ… So, then, if with Christ you've put all that pretentious and infantile religion behind you, why do you let yourselves be bullied by it? "Don't touch this! Don't taste that! Don't go near this!" Do you think things that are here today and gone tomorrow are worth that kind of attention? Such things sound impressive if said in a deep enough voice. They even give the illusion of being pious and humble and ascetic. But they're just another way of showing off, making yourselves look important.” (The Message)

People, we miss that the substance of our salvation is Jesus, not the technicalities that make us look and sound holy. Christians need a reality check on what living in salvation really entails. If we are in constant condemnation under the laws and rules that we attempt to follow to the T, we are never going to experience the reason why Christ died for us. Therefore, it’s time that believers remove the spiritual cataracts that have been placed over our eyes by the enemy, and really begin to live the abundant life.

God wants us to have fun and enjoy our time here on earth. And despite the popular belief of some Christians, we can sing, dance, celebrate, laugh, smile, etc. and still love God and be called to (and following) the purpose that He intended for our lives. Moreover, it’s important that we stop lingering on, and serving, the shadows (rules, doctrines, traditions etc.) that prepared the way for Christ, and really serve Christ (the substance of our salvation) in freedom.

Choose substance people!
